Some nerves pass down your spinal column, but others exit the brain directly into parts of the body; these are called cranial nerves, of which your vagus nerve is the longest and most complex.

Parts of your nervous system are responsible for voluntary control, such as the moving of an arm. But other parts are responsible for controlling involuntary functions, such as the heart beating. When we are working or under stress, the sympathetic branch works to increase bodily functions such as heart rate and oxygen exchange while suppressing processes such as digestion. It is often referred to as the ‘fight of flight’ branch. The parasympathetic branch works in the opposite direction, working to reduce heart rate, relax energy production and increase the function of the digestive system. It is therefore often referred to as the ‘rest and digest’ branch.


The two branches are complementary and constantly work together to maintain balance in your body whatever the situation. So even in an action as simple as standing up, the sympathetic branch will initially accelerate your heart rate, but almost immediately, the parasympathetic branch will become active and try to bring your heart rate back down. If one of these branches becomes dysfunctional the body is less able to maintain healthy balance.

This delicate balance is pervasive and interconnected. Many feedback loops from all the nervous systems of the body interact continuously and dysfunction in major branches of nerves can greatly impact health.
